SPACE-FTL: Empowering Parents of Young Adults Facing “Failure to Launch”

SPACE-FTL: Empowering Parents of Young Adults Facing “Failure to Launch”

Is Anxiety Holding Your Adult Child Back?

It is a painful and confusing position for a parent: watching a capable young adult remain stuck while their peers move forward. You may feel caught in an exhausting cycle of pushing and protecting—trying to motivate them while fearing that too much pressure might cause a total collapse.

At Rise OCD and Anxiety, Dr. Rochelle Holtzman specializes in SPACE-FTL (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions – Failure to Launch adaptation). This evidence-based, parent-focused treatment is designed specifically for families where a young adult’s transition to independence has been stalled by anxiety, OCD, or avoidance.

Understanding “Failure to Launch” (FTL)

“Failure to Launch” is not a diagnosis of laziness or a lack of character. More often than not, it is a clinical pattern where anxiety is the primary driver. We generally define FTL as an individual aged 18–35 who:

  • Is not actively employed (working fewer than 10 hours per week).
  • Is not consistently engaged in education or vocational training (even if enrolled).
  • Is not responsible for their own housing expenses (living at home or having rent paid by parents).

The Role of Anxiety and Avoidance

While the outward behavior may look like a lack of motivation, it is frequently rooted in a deep-seated fear of failure, social anxiety, or the overwhelming nature of adult responsibilities. FTL often co-occurs with:

  • Generalized or Social Anxiety
  • OCD and Related Disorders
  • Depression
  • Neurodivergence (ADHD or Autism Spectrum)

Why Focus on the Parent(s)?

Traditional therapy often stalls because the young adult may refuse to attend, or they may be too entrenched in avoidance for individual work to be effective.

SPACE-FTL is unique because the adult child does not need to be present or even consent to the treatment. By working directly with you – whether you are a single parent, a solo caregiver, or a couple – we address the system at home. When a child is struggling, parents naturally accommodate—they take over chores, provide financial cushions without requirements, or shield the child from stressful triggers. While done out of love, these accommodations can unintentionally reinforce the anxiety and maintain the state of dependence.

Importantly, progress can begin with just one motivated parent. You do not need the participation of a co-parent or partner to start making meaningful shifts in the home environment.

SPACE-FTL is ideal when:

  • Your adult child refuses their own treatment.
  • Previous individual therapy for your child has plateaued.
  • You are motivated for change, even if your child is not yet ready to engage.
  • You want to stop the cycle of “rescuing” but don’t know how to start without escalating conflict.
